Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley (born March 26, 1985 in Teddington, London, England) is an English actress. She is the daughter of Sharman Macdonald, a Scottish playwright, and Will Knightley, an English actor. Knightley has lived most of her life in Richmond upon Thames.

Career

She started to follow in her parents’ footsteps at an early stage, making her film debut at the age of nine in A Village Affair (1994). Her first major theatrical appearance was as Sabé, Padmé Amidala’s decoy in the 1999 release Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Knightley was cast because of her close resemblance to Natalie Portman, who played Padmé. Her first major starring role was as the daughter of Robin Hood in a made-for-TV Walt Disney Productions feature, Princess of Thieves, first telecast in 2001.

Knightley is best known for her breakthrough roles in Bend It Like Beckham and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Bend It Like Beckham was especially physically demanding for Knightley in terms of the intense football training she underwent but opened the way for her into Hollywood. Her role in the blockbuster Pirates cemented her up-and-coming position in international cinema.

In 2004 Knightley appeared in the blockbuster King Arthur, which, although criticised for its numerous historical inaccuracies, was praised by critic Roger Ebert for "the considerable production qualities and the charisma of the actors, who bring more interest to the characters than they deserve", Knightley being described as looking "simultaneously sexy and muddy" fitting in with the current vogue for strong female action heroes (something which Knightley repeated in a modern setting in the 2005 film Domino).

Keira Knightley in King Arthur (2004).Knightley’s dedication to developing herself as an actress rather than a movie star was noted by Time magazine in a 2004 feature. In July 2004, Knightley was voted by readers of Hello! magazine as the movie industry’s most promising teen star. Additionally, Knightley was voted the sexiest movie star of all time by the readers of Empire magazine, leaving behind other stars such as Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Charlize Theron, Julia Roberts, Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot.

In 2005 Knightley starred in the title role of Tony Scott’s film Domino inspired by the life of his friend Domino Harvey, a British born model-turned- L.A. bounty hunter who died in July 2005 of an overdose aged 35. Ebert commented that, although the movie is "fractured and maddening" it is also "alive", praising Knightley for her ability to play a diversity of roles. In contrast to Knightley’s role in the same year of the regency englishwoman Elizabeth Bennett in a film adaption of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice with Donald Sutherland and Matthew Macfadyen. Recently opening at No.1 in the UK box office, it is her sixth film to do so in her career.

She is currently filming the sequels to the immensely popular Pirates of the Caribbean series, due for release in the summers of 2006 and 2007 respectively. She recently ended her relationship with Irish model Jamie Dornan. She has been awarded Personality Of The Year 2005 by Variety UK, and is widely tipped for either a Golden Globe or Academy Award nomination in 2006 for her portrayal of Elizabeth Bennet in Pride & Prejudice. Beside acting, Knightley is currently modelling for Asprey, a British luxury items company.

Halle Berry

Halle Berry

Halle Maria Berry (born August 14, 1966 in Cleveland, Ohio) is an Academy Award-winning actress and model.

Biography

Early life and career

Halle on the Dec 2002 cover of VogueHalle Berry was named after Halle’s Department Store, a local landmark in Cleveland, Ohio. She is the daughter of Judith Ann Hawkins, a caucasian of English ancestry, and Jerome J. Berry, who is African-American. Berry’s maternal grandmother, Nellie Dicken, was born in Sawley, Derbyshire, England, while her maternal grandfather, Earl Ellsworth Hawkins, was born in Ohio. Berry’s parents divorced when she was 4 years old and she subsequently was raised by her mother, a psychiatric-ward nurse. She also has an older sister, Heidi.

Berry was a popular student at Bedford High School and was a cheerleader, honor society member, editor of the school newspaper, class president and prom queen. She worked in the children’s department at Higbee’s Department Store. Her personality, as described by a co-worker, was expressed in these terms…"I can hardly believe how sweet and nice she had been to everyone. People who weren’t half as beautiful as she did not display the kind of inner beauty she exhibited." She subsequently attended Cuyahoga Community College.

Before becoming an actress, she entered several beauty contests, including Miss Ohio USA, Miss Teen All American, Miss USA (first runner-up in 1986) and Miss World.

Hollywood career

In the late 1980s, she went to Chicago to pursue a modeling career as well as acting. One of her first acting projects was a television series for local cable by Gordon Lake Productions called "Chicago Force."

Berry auditioned for a role in an updated Charlie’s Angels television series by producer Aaron Spelling. At the time, Spelling wanted one of the "Angels" to be a African American woman. She did not get the role (because the project never materialized) but she impressed Spelling with her skills, encouraging her to continue perfecting her craft.

In 1989, Berry landed the role of brainy Emily Franklin in the short-lived ABC television series Living Dolls (which was a spin-off of Who’s the Boss?). Her breakthrough feature film role was in Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever where she played a drug addict named Vivian. Her first co-starring role was in the film Strictly Business. Another one of her early roles was in a supporting capacity in the Flintstones movie where she played "Sharon Stone" (a part rumored to have been intended for Sharon Stone). The year before, Berry really caught the public’s attention with her portrayal as a female slave in the TV adaption of Queen: The Story of an American Family.

Berry is also known by most comic book fans for her portrayal of Storm in the movie adaptation of the successful comic book X-Men (2000) and its successful sequel X2: X-Men United (2003). Berry will reprise her role again in the third installment X-Men 3 scheduled for a May 2006 release. In late 2003 Berry starred in the thriller Gothika, which was the first film that she "carried," i.e., her role was the most important one in the film.

Marriages

Berry has been married twice. Her first marriage in 1992 to baseball player David Justice ended in a 1996 divorce due to infidelity. Her second marriage in 2001 to musician Eric Benét has resulted in a 2004 separation (and 2005 divorce) reportedly due to Benét’s infidelity. She has said that she will never marry again. Although she does not have any children herself, she is close to her step-daughter India from her marriage to Benét and is also rumored that she is pregnant by her current boyfriend (Michael Ealy). Berry does have two Maltese dogs: Miss Polly and Little Willie.

They later married in 2002, in a romantic ceremony in the Hamptons. Kevin Hill and Halle Berry had three childern Mercedes 7, Porsche 3, and Alexus 2. Since then they have lived happily ever after Mailbu, California.

Film Awards

Halle Berry at the Academy AwardsBerry won the best actress Oscar in 2002 for Monster’s Ball, becoming the first African American woman to win this award.
Berry won an Emmy in 1999 for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for her portayal of Dorothy Dandridge in the HBO movie Introducing Dorothy Dandridge. Interestingly, Dorothy Dandridge was the first African American woman to be nominated for a best actress Academy Award. Another similarity the two women shared was being born in the same hospital.
Berry won a Razzie for her starring role in 2004’s Catwoman. She made headlines by accepting her award in person, an unusual gesture that was last performed by Tom Green in 2001. Berry accepted her award with dignity, saying, "When I was a kid, my mother told me that if you could not be a good loser, then there’s no way you could be a good winner" but adding "I hope to God I never see these people again!" shortly afterward. At the podium, she appeared with her Razzie in one hand, and her 2002 Oscar in the other.

Controversy

In February 2000, she was involved in a car accident when she struck another vehicle after running a red light and left the scene before the police arrived. Berry, who had sustained a head injury, later stated she had no recollection of the accident and pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge. She paid a fine, made restitution to the other driver, performed community services, and was placed on three years’ probation.
Having long refused to do any nude scenes, much was made of her first topless scene in the film Swordfish, a thirty-second scene for which she allegedly was paid an additional US$500,000. She followed this with a more extended nude love scene in Monster’s Ball. Her appearance in this film won her the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2002. As Bond Girl Jinx in 2002’s Die Another Day she famously re-created the scene from Dr. No, bursting from the surf - scantily clad - to be greeted by James Bond, as Ursula Andress did 40 years earlier.

Trivia

In 2003, Berry was named in FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women in the World poll.
Also in 2003, Berry was on Punk’d, MTV’s celebrity prank show.
She has diabetes and acquired unilateral hearing loss (80% hearing loss in one ear) after being severely beaten by a former boyfriend. Accounts differ as to whether the abusive boyfriend was Wesley Snipes or Christopher Williams.
She is currently living with her boyfriend Michael Ealy of Barbershop fame.

Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore

Drew Blythe Barrymore (born February 22, 1975 in Culver City, California) is an American film and television actress and producer.

Her family

She is the granddaughter of stage actor John Barrymore, and the great-niece of Lionel Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore. Her father, John Drew Barrymore, and half-brother, John Blyth, are also actors (although they haven’t experienced the critical or commercial success the other Barrymores have enjoyed). "Drew" was the maiden name of her great-grandmother, Georgiana; "Blythe" was the original surname of the dynasty founded by her great-grandfather, Maurice. Drew’s mother is Hungarian-born actress and model, Ildiko Jaid Mako (b. 1944).

Career

Barrymore’s career began at the age of 11 months, when she appeared in a dog food commercial. When she was bitten by her canine co-star, the producers feared litigation, though Barrymore merely laughed the incident off. She shot to fame as a child actor when she co-starred in the 1982 Steven Spielberg film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. At the age of 7, on November 20, 1982, Barrymore became the youngest ever guest host of the weekly TV program Saturday Night Live. She performed in a skit where she revealed that she had killed E.T.

Biography

In the wake of this sudden stardom, she endured a notoriously troubled childhood, drinking alcoholic beverages by the time she was 9, smoking marijuana at 10, and snorting cocaine at 12. Barrymore later described this early period of her life in her 1990 autobiography, Little Girl Lost. Though overcoming her substance abuse problems by the time she entered adulthood, Barrymore maintained her "bad girl" image, and in fact leveraged her new found role as a sex symbol to stage a career comeback in the 1990s, playing a teenage seductress in Poison Ivy, and posing nude for the January 1995 issue of U.S. magazine Playboy. Steven Spielberg, Barrymore’s godfather, gave her a quilt for her 20th birthday with a note that read "Cover yourself up". Enclosed was a copy of her Playboy appearance, with the pictures altered by his art department so that she appeared fully clothed. At that time she had also appeared nude in her last five movies. During a 1995 appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, Barrymore shocked the normally unflappable host by climbing onto his desk and flashing her breasts at him (but with her back to the camera), as part of a dance for his birthday. She also modelled in a series of Guess? jeans advertisements during this time.

Drew Barrymore on The Late Show with David Letterman in 1995, immediately after notoriously flashing the host on-air for his birthday.Barrymore has continued to be a highly bankable movie actress. Though her playful sex appeal has undoubtedly helped her remain in the media spotlight, she has also established a substantial career behind the scenes, despite never finishing high school. She has produced several films, including the highly successful Charlie’s Angels movie adaptation and its sequel. In addition to the light-hearted romantic comedies that she has typically starred in, she has also recently explored more dramatic roles in movies such as Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and the cult favorite Donnie Darko, of which she was also the executive producer. Barrymore has started to receive more notice both as a serious actress and a savvy Hollywood "player", though without losing her reputation as a sex symbol and (occasional) hellraiser.

Barrymore’s career makes for colorful copy. In the words of Yahoo! Movies:

Heir to a Hollywood dynasty, child star, prepubescent drug and alcohol abuser, teenage sexpot, and resurrected vessel of celluloid purity, Drew Barrymore is nothing if not the embodiment of the rise and fall of Hollywood fortunes, self-reinvention, and the healing powers of good PR.
On February 3, 2004, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Barrymore was married to Welsh bartender turned bar owner, Jeremy Thomas, from March 20 to April 28, 1994, and to comedian Tom Green from July 7, 2001 to October 15, 2002 (Green filed for divorce in December 2001). She is currently dating drummer Fabrizio Moretti of The Strokes. Barrymore has also publicly declared herself to be bisexual, revealing that she had slept with many women as a teenager and is still very interested in women sexually.

Trivia

Barrymore was delivered by Dr. Paul Fleiss, father of Heidi Fleiss (interview on The Tonight Show, January 22, 2003).
She is the godmother of Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of musicians Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.
She has 6 tattoos: a crescent moon on her big toe, a cross with ivy on her lower leg, a butterfly on her stomach, a daisy on her hip, and 2 angels on her lower back (one has a banner with her mother’s name, Jaid, and the other has the name James–a tribute to her then-boyfriend Jamie Walters).

Tiffani Amber Thiessen

Tiffani Amber Thiessen

Tiffani-Amber Thiessen (born January 23, 1974 in Long Beach, California, USA to Frank Thiessen and Robyn Ernest) is an American television and film actress. After many years of going by her full name, she is now credited as simply Tiffani Thiessen. Thiessen had a restraining order against KLSX’s Frosty Stilwell for stalking.

As a child, she competed in many beauty pageants, and she won the Miss Junior America pageant in 1987. Her first big break in show business was her role on the television program Saved By The Bell, as nice girl teen Kelly Kapowski. This was very different from her next major role, as a duplicitous vixen on Beverly Hills, 90210. She later starred in the sitcom Two Guys and a Girl and the short-lived action show Fastlane.

Her transition to movies has not gone well so far, as most of her movies, including Love Stinks, have been critically panned. In 2002, she appeared in the film Hollywood Ending by Woody Allen.

In March 1999, her boyfriend at the time, actor David Strickland (Suddenly Susan), committed suicide.

On July 9, 2005, she married actor Brady Smith. It is the first marriage for both.

Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet

Kate Elizabeth Winslet (born October 5, 1975 in Reading, Berkshire, England) is an English actress most famous for her role as Rose DeWitt Bukater in the 1997 blockbuster film Titanic.

Her career began on television, with a co-starring role in the BBC children’s science-fiction serial Dark Season in 1991, followed by an appearance in an episode of the medical drama Casualty in 1993, also for the BBC.

Winslet’s film career took off in 1994 when she performed her first leading role as Juliet Hulme in Peter Jackson’s criticly acclaimed Heavenly Creatures. Since then she has acted in several films, such as Sense and Sensibility, Titanic, Iris, Finding Neverland, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, earning her four Oscar nominations and four Golden Globes.

Kate Winslet has also enjoyed a brief taste of success as a singer, with her single "What If" from the Christmas Carol: The Movie soundtrack. More recently her musical talents have been shown in her duet with "Weird Al" Yankovic on the Sandra Boynton CD "Dog Train."

On November 22, 1998 Winslet married director Jim Threapleton with whom she has a daughter named Mia Honey. After her divorce in 2001, she began a relationship with director Sam Mendes. Winslet married Mendes on May 24, 2003 on the island of Anguilla in the West Indies and their son Joe Alfie Winslet-Mendes was born on December 22, 2003.

On January 25, 2005 Winslet was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. She eventually lost to Hilary Swank. This tied her for the record for most Academy Award nominations for an actress before the age of 30. This nomination was preceded by nominations for Best Supporting Actress in Sense and Sensibility and Iris. Winslet was also nominated for Best Actress in Titanic, but lost to Helen Hunt. She was also nominated for a BAFTA for Best Actress in that film and in Finding Neverland, but lost to Imelda Staunton.

Her home town of Reading has named a street - Winslet Place - in her honour, built on the site of a demolished cinema.

Winslet is famous for her curvaceous figure, and the media, in England in particular, have enthusiastically documented her weight fluctuations over the years. Winslet, a former anorexic, has been outspoken about her refusal to lose weight in order to conform to the Hollywood "ideal". In February 2003, the British edition of GQ magazine published photographs of Winslet which had been airbrushed to make her look dramatically thinner than she really was; Winslet issued a statement saying that the alterations were made without her consent.

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise is the stage name of Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, an American actor, producer, and Scientologist who has starred in a number of top-grossing movies and remains one of the biggest movie stars in the world. His first leading role in a blockbuster movie was in 1983’s Risky Business.

Early life

Cruise was born to Thomas Cruise Mapother III and Mary Lee Pfeiffer on July 3, 1962 in Syracuse, New York. His paternal ancestry is Welsh: his great great grandfather Dylan Henry Mapother emigrated from Flint, in north Wales, to the United States in 1860. Cruise also has German ancestry from his paternal great-grandparents, William Reibert and Charlotta Louise Voelker. Cruise’s parents moved frequently when he was a child, residing in a number of locations throughout the United States and Canada, including Ottawa; Louisville, Kentucky; Glen Ridge, New Jersey (where he attended Glen Ridge High School); and Wayne, New Jersey. Before going into acting, Cruise attended a Franciscan seminary and aspired to become a Catholic priest.

Acting career

He received Academy Award nominations for Born on the Fourth of July (1989) and Jerry Maguire (1996), both as Best Actor; and for Magnolia (1999), as Best Supporting Actor. In 1996, he became the first actor in history to star in five consecutive films that grossed $100 million in domestic release. The films were A Few Good Men (1992), The Firm (1993), Interview with the Vampire (1994), Mission: Impossible (1996) and Jerry Maguire (1996).

Cruise also took on more unusual roles following Interview With The Vampire and Jerry Maguire, with Eyes Wide Shut (1999) which took two years to finish as director Stanley Kubrick’s last film, alongside former spouse Nicole Kidman. Cruise also performed as a misogynistic male guru in Magnolia (1999), which netted him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination, and in very rare form, played a villain as the hitman who kidnaps unsuspecting cabbie Jamie Foxx in Michael Mann’s Collateral (2004).

Cruise teamed with producer Paula Wagner to form Cruise/Wagner Productions, which has co-produced several of Cruise’s films such as Mission: Impossible and its sequels, Vanilla Sky (2001), and The Last Samurai (2003). The company also co-produced The Others (2001).

Sex appeal

In 1990, 1991 and 1997, People magazine rated him among the 50 most beautiful people in the world. In 1995, Empire magazine ranked him among the 100 sexiest stars in film history. Two years later, it ranked him among the top 5 movie stars of all time. In 2002 and 2003, he was rated by Premiere among the top 20 in its annual Power 100 list. Although not being what you would call conventionally handsome and being from all reports a below average height of about 5 ft. 7 Cruise has a huge female fan base.

10/05 UPDATE Tom Cruise’s popularity has dropped significantly in the last few months, according to the latest Genius StarPower report. By all measures, the plunge (among 13 to 49 year-olds) is steep for a celebrity of his magnitude:

his StarPower ranking plummeted from 12th to 50th
he went from the 11th most liked celebrity to the 197th
his fan base (those who like or like him a lot) shrank from 33% to 25%
he ranks among the top 5 most controversial actors (those who are heavily disliked and liked), along with David Spade, Tom Green, Pauly Shore and Ashton Kutcher.

The drop follows Cruise’s controversial publicity tour for the release of “War Of The Worlds” and his engagement to actress Katie Holmes. The above figures are from the Genius StarPower Summer 2005 report (covering the six months to July 1, 2005) and the Spring 2005 report (covering the six months to April 1, 2005).

Personal life

Cruise has been married twice, to Mimi Rogers (married on May 9, 1987, divorced February 4, 1990) and later Nicole Kidman (married on December 24, 1990, divorced August 8, 2001). He and Nicole Kidman adopted two children, Isabella (born 1993) and Connor (born 1995). Cruise recently discussed his bi-racial son with the TV talk show host Oprah Winfrey. Oprah asked Cruise if the issue of his race was ever discussed in the household. "We’re from the human race, human kind," Cruise said. "I mean, what’s there to talk about? He’s my son. Listen, that’s just how I feel about it. He’s my son. I’ve never thought about color, race, I just have not thought about that."

During his marriage to actress Nicole Kidman, the couple endured public speculation about their sex life and rumors that Cruise was gay. In May 2001 he filed a lawsuit against gay porn actor Chad Slater. Slater had allegedly told the celebrity magazine Actustar that he had engaged in an affair with Cruise. Both Slater and Cruise denied this, and in August 2001 Slater was ordered to pay $10 million to Cruise in damages.

It is also rumored that Kidman lost interest in Scientology, and the friction between her and Cruise over this issue drove the marriage apart. Tom Cruise left Nicole Kidman 3 months pregnant just shy of their 10 year anniversary. Nicole lost the child.

Cruise was next romantically linked with Penélope Cruz, the lead actress in his film Vanilla Sky. In March 2004, he announced that his relationship with Penélope Cruz had ended in January. In April 2005, he began dating Katie Holmes, before announcing on 17 June 2005 that he had proposed to her at the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France . She accepted his offer, but the couple have yet to decide on a wedding date.

Church of Scientology

Cruise is arguably Hollywood’s most outspoken member of the Church of Scientology. He joined in 1986 while married to Mimi Rogers. Cruise has publicly said that Scientology, specifically the L. Ron Hubbard Scientology Study Tech , allowed him to overcome his dyslexia .

Since 2004, Cruise has talked more openly about Scientology and promoted its ideas, especially its rejection of psychiatric drugs, which was the subject of a heated argument with Matt Lauer on the Today Show on June 24, 2005. He openly criticized actress Brooke Shields for using the drug Paxil, an anti-depressant, which Shields claims helped her recover from post-partum depression after the birth of her daughter in 2003; Brooke Shields subsequently questioned Cruise’s wisdom. Cruise also claimed in an Entertainment Weekly interview that psychiatry "is a Nazi science" and that methadone was actually originally called Adolophine after Adolf Hitler , a well-known urban legend. In an interview with Der Spiegel magazine, Cruise claimed that "In Scientology, we have the only successful drug rehabilitation program in the world. It’s called Narconon… It’s a statistically proven fact that there is only one successful drug rehabilitation program in the world. Period." (While Narconon claims to have a success rate over 70%, no outside source has ever verified this claim, let alone declaring it the only successful program as a matter of statistical fact.)

Tom Cruise has said "There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance in the body." This runs counter to what is believed by most of the medical profession; chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin are widely recognized as playing a role in some mental disorders.

Cruise’s more open attitude to Scientology has been attributed to the departure of his publicist of 14 years, Pat Kingsley in March 2004. He replaced her with his sister, fellow Scientologist Lee Anne DeVette, who served in that role until November 2005.

Recently Cruise has also been reported to have risen to one of the highest echelons of the Church of Scientology, what is known as ‘Operating Thetan Seven’ or OT-VII. This rise in the ranks also has contributed to Cruise’s more frequent comments on Scientology, since that level reportedly giv
es Cruise, among other things, more authoritative powers. Cruise’s fiancée, Katie Holmes, recently has begun studying Scientology, which Cruise says does not conflict with her Roman Catholic upbringing.

Cruise may have successfully converted his bride-to-be, Katie Holmes, into Scientology but failed to convert Scarlett Johansson. After two hours of proselytizing, Cruise introduced her to a room full of upper level Scientologists waiting to dine with the pair at that point she excused herself politely. She had then pulled out of Cruise’s upcoming movie Mission Impossible III. Johansson never confirmed this incident and claimed to have dropped out of the movie due to scheduling conflicts with a Woody Allen film she is working on.

Wikinews has news related to this article:
Church of Scientology does not see humor in website dedicated to Tom CruiseAs of 2005, Tom Cruise has begun advocating for the Church of Scientology before politicians and government officials around the world. As an example, he has lobbied French minister Nicolas Sarkozy in favor of Scientology. Such advocacy does not go well in several European countries where this organization is considered as a cult that swindles its members. As an example, on July 13th, 2005, the city council of Paris vowed "never to receive [before the council or the mayor] the actor Tom Cruise, spokesman for Scientology and self-declared militant for this organisation" after he was mentioned as lobbying Sarkozy and Jean-Claude Gaudin, mayor of Marseille.

Cruise also fell victim to South Park episode (Trapped in the Closet), which explicitly made fun of Scientology. It alluded to his possible homosexuality when he locked himself inside a closet after Stan told him that he was a decent actor, but "not as great as the guy who played Napoleon Dynamite." Throughout the episode while he was in the closet, all the other characters, including fellow Scientologist John Travolta, R&B singer R. Kelly, and ex-wife Nicole Kidman, pleaded with him to "come out of the closet".

Cruise’s involvement with Scientology is parodied on the site scienTOMogy.info.

Oprah, interviews and Katie Holmes

Tom Cruise debates psychiatry on Today show
Tom Cruise jumps ecstatically on Oprah’s couchOn May 23, 2005, Cruise raised some eyebrows with a frenzied, almost manic appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show in which he — in the words of The New York Times — "jumped around the set, hopped onto a couch, fell rapturously to one knee and repeatedly professed his love for his new girlfriend, the actress Katie Holmes."

Cruise’s public image came under further scrutiny after a number of subsequent television interviews in which he was described as acting in an odd manner and espousing a number of controversial views. In his famous Matt Lauer interview, Cruise appeared tired and hostile when discussing psychiatry. He accused Lauer of being "glib" and insisted that there is "no such thing as a chemical imbalance," and that through "vitamins and exercise" a person’s psychiatric problems can be cured. Noting that Katie Holmes was embracing Scientology, Lauer then asked Cruise if he could be with someone who wasn’t a Scientologist. He replied: "It’s something you don’t understand. You can be a Christian and be a Scientologist. It is a religion in that it deals with the spirit, you as a spiritual being."

This short, yet very public love affair took a dramatic turn when Cruise and Holmes got engaged in Paris while on a world publicity tour for their two most recent movies (War of the Worlds for Cruise and Batman Begins for Holmes). War of the Worlds director Steven Spielberg has been critical of Cruise’s focus on his relationship during promotion of the film, but believed it to be genuine. On October 5, 2005, it was reported by People magazine that Holmes is pregnant. The birth would be Holmes’ first child, and Cruise’s third. Cruise has two adopted children; Connor, 10, and Isabella, 12, from his marriage to Nicole Kidman.

Cruise’s hostile behavior in recent interviews and his very public romance with Katie Holmes have led to his being the butt of numerous jokes on late night television shows such as Late Night with Conan O’Brien and The Late Show with David Letterman. The jokes commonly refer to Cruise being crazy or insane. The phrase "jumping the couch" is now used to refer to someone (usually a celebrity) who seems to have gone insane.

In the wake of these events, Tom Cruise demoted his sister LeAnne DeVette and replaced her with veteran publicist Paul Bloch, from the publicity firm Rogers and Cowan. Such restructuring is seen as a move to curtail publicity about Tom’s Scientology views, though DeVette said that it was her decision to work on philanthropic projects rather than publicity.
