Keri Russell

Keri Russell

Keri Lynn Russell (born March 23, 1976) is an American actress and dancer, most known for playing the title role on the television series Felicity. She was born in Fountain Valley, California to David Russell and Stephanie Stephens, and grew up in Mesa, Arizona and Denver, Colorado.

Early career

Russell first found her way onto television as a cast member of the New Mickey Mouse Club variety show on the Disney Channel. She was on the show from 1991 to 1993, with her final year seeing the introduction of soon-to-be pop singers Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and Justin Timberlake.

Appearances

Several appearances on film and TV followed, with one of her most significant pre-Felicity roles coming in the 1996’s The Babysitter’s Seduction. However, it was a fairly stereotypical TV movie, with melodramatic overtones. She had a role in the shortlived soap opera series Malibu Shores the same year. Russell also had an appearance on Jon Bon Jovi’s music video "Always" with Jack Noseworthy.

Television

A major attraction for many fans of the actress is her (usually) long and curly hair. A drastic hairstyle change at the beginning of Felicity’s second season was considered to be the cause of a significant drop in the show’s ratings. This reportedly led to a new policy at The WB where major changes in appearance by on-screen talent must be approved by the network.

Major roles

The filming of Felicity had left Russell somewhat drained, so she went on hiatus when the series ended and considered quitting acting. Her next role was as part of the Mel Gibson-led bio-pic We Were Soldiers in 2002, where she played the wife of an American serviceman who became involved in the first major battle between U.S. and Viet Cong forces in the Vietnam War. After that, she moved to New York City and took about two years to avoid the business of Hollywood, spending time with friends.

Broadway

The actress made her Broadway stage debut in 2004, appearing with Jeremy Piven, Andrew McCarthy, and Ashlie Atkinson in Neil LaBute’s Fat Pig. In 2005 she returned to television and film, first with an appearance in the Hallmark Hall of Fame TV movie Magic of Ordinary Days. In theatrical release was The Upside of Anger, where she appeared alongside Kevin Costner and Joan Allen. She will be in the mid-year miniseries Into the West.

Felicity co-stars

A number of her Felicity co-stars went on to appear in J.J. Abrams’s next TV series, Alias, but Russell has declined invitations to be part of the show. In a seminar at the Museum of Television and Radio, Abrams said, "I’ve asked Keri if she would ever do it [Alias], and I usually get this, sort of like, giggle—and then she hangs up." In 2005, he asked her to join the cast of Mission: Impossible III, and she accepted. The film is due for release in 2006.

Personal life

She currently resides in Manhattan.

Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson

Jessica Ann Simpson (born July 10, 1980) is an American Pop singer who rose to fame during the late 1990s. She starred with Nick Lachey in the MTV reality show Newlyweds, released her own line of beauty products called Dessert, and started a career as an actress with appearances in the TV series That ’70s Show and in the film The Dukes of Hazzard.

Beginning

Simpson was born in Abilene, Texas and raised in Richardson, a suburb of Dallas, Texas. She is the daughter of Joe Truett Simpson (a former Baptist youth minister) and Tina Ann Drew (a former Sunday School teacher). She has a younger sister, Ashlee, who launched her own music career in mid-2004. Jessica started singing at the age of twelve as a part of her Baptist church choir. At the same age, she made an unsuccessful application for The New Mickey Mouse Club, which starred fellow pop singers Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, among other future stars.

Jessica attended J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson, Texas. Simpson was discovered singing at a church camp by a head of a small contemporary Christian record label and recorded an album over the next three years; however, the label folded before the record could be released. She dropped out in her senior year in order to tour and promote her demo album, which was funded by her grandmother, Joyce (thus the reason for the name of her 2004 holiday album, Rejoyce: The Christmas Album); she later earned her GED. During this time, she toured with the Christian Youth Conference circuit performing with Kirk Franklin, God’s Property and CeCe Winans. She and her father sold copies of the album after her performances.

Tommy Mottola of Columbia Records obtained a copy of the album and, thinking she had potential as a pop singer, signed her as such. Christian influences can still be found in much of her music.

Music career

Sweet Kisses

On November 23, 1999, Jessica released her debut pop album Sweet Kisses, which reached a peak of number twenty-five on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and also made the top forty of the U.K. charts. The album proved to be a success, selling two million copies in the U.S. Her first single, the Platinum-selling "I Wanna Love You Forever," reached the top five of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and the top ten in Canada and the U.K. in late 1999. Her second single, a duet with then-boyfriend, now-husband Nick Lachey of 98 Degrees, "Where You Are," was a modest radio hit. The last single from the album, the John Mellencamp-sampled "I Think I’m in Love with You," was a top forty hit in the U.S. and a top twenty hit in Canada and the U.K. In 2000, Simpson won two Teen Choice Awards for Choice Breakout Artist and Love Song of the Year ("Where You Are").

Irresistible

Simpson’s second album, Irresistible, released on June 5, 2001, reached the top ten of the Billboard 200 and top twenty of the Canadian album charts. Despite this improvement, the album’s sales were less than satisfactory; to date, it has only managed to be certified Gold in the U.S. for selling over 500,000 copies. The title track lead single, "Irresistible," reached the top twenty in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., as well as the top forty in Australia and Switzerland. A follow-up single entitled "A Little Bit" was also released, but failed to achieve much success apart from reaching the top twenty in Portugal.

Between her second and third albums, Simpson released a collection of remixes entitled This Is the Remix on July 2, 2002. However, the collection failed to even chart on the Billboard 200.

In This Skin

Coinciding with Newlyweds, her third album, In This Skin, was released on August 19, 2003. On a whole, the record featured a much more mature sound compared to her earlier releases. Though the album initially was not a huge success, it got its chance to rebound on the charts when a special collector’s edition was released on March 2, 2004. This helped Skin to reach a peak of number two on the Billboard 200 and the top forty of the U.K. charts, due largely in part to the success of Newlyweds. The album eventually proved to be her most successful, selling three million copies in the U.S. and allowing her teetering music career a second chance. The first single from the album was a cover of Diane Warren’s "Sweetest Sin"; the song was not very successful, however, and caused a setback in sales of Skin early on. The follow-up single, the Gold-selling "With You," enjoyed much more success, and has gone on to become her signature song and arguably most successful single. The song reached the top ten in the U.K. and the top twenty in the U.S. and Australia, as well as on world adult charts. The third single, a cover of Berlin’s "Take My Breath Away," also reached the top twenty in the U.S. A cover version of Robbie Williams’ "Angels" was released as the fourth and final single from the album.

After the double success of her reality show and In This Skin, Simpson began to bank on her new-found popularity by releasing a line of edible beauty products called Dessert Beauty and Dessert Treats. She has also unleashed her own clothing line called JS, which is named after her own initials.

And the Band Played On

Jessica’s next album, And the Band Played On, is set to be released sometime in 2006. It has been described as having "a little bit of everything in it," and it will sound like "Billie Holiday, Patsy Cline, Stevie Nicks — it’s all over the place. But then there’s songs for us girls to dance to in the club," according to Simpson. Information has it that the lead single off the album will be "Fired Up," a song written by Simpson and Scott Storch, who described the song as Jessica’s "Dirrty." It has been rumored that the track is to be produced by Lil’ Jon. For the first time, Simpson has participated for much of the process of the creation of the album; she has registered a number of new songs on ASCAP.com and is also the executive producer of the album.

Reality Show

Jessica and Nick Lachey. On October 26, 2002 Simpson married Nick Lachey. Simpson famously announced that she remained a virgin until her wedding night, making Lachey the only man she had been with. During the summer of 2003, Simpson and husband Lachey’s reality show Newlyweds began airing on MTV. Though Simpson was moderately famous before the series began, the show is considered responsible for transforming her into a star. However, on November 23, 2005, Simpson and Lachey officially announced their separation in a joint statement.

Throughout the run of three seasons, she often appeared as a stereotype of a dumb blonde, notably when she asked whether the Chicken of the Sea tuna she was eating was chicken or fish, and when she thought that buffalo wings were made from actual buffalo. Her apparent stupidity made the show a huge hit, making the average rating for each episode about 1.4 million viewers. When introduced to Interior Secretary Gale Norton, Simpson responded: "You’ve done a nice job decorating the White House."

Banking on the success of her new popularity, she appeared on a variety show with Lachey on the ABC called the Nick and Jessica Variety Hour on April 11, 2004. A pilot for a sitcom on ABC was also planned, but was rejected by network executives in May 2004. During that summer, Simpson won three Teen Choice Awards for Female Fashion Icon, Hottie Female, and Female Reality/Variety TV Star, further proving that Newlyweds had greatly strengthened her overall popularity. In 2005, the series won a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Reality Show. Shortly after, Newlyweds wrapped.

Movie Career

Jessica in The Dukes Of Hazzard.During the summer of 2005, Simpson made her her big screen debut as Daisy Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard. The film debuted at number one in the box office charts, grossing more than thirty million USD. One of the tracks off the soundtrack for the film, "These Boots Are Made for Walkin’," was sung by none other than Simpson. It peaked within in the top twenty in the U.S., but made it well into the top ten in other countries such as the U.K. and Australia, making it arguably Simpson’s biggest international hit. The provocative music video for the single also earned itself quite a bit of media attention.

In the aftermath of Dukes, Simpson’s fans noticed her buttocks flattening. Speculation abounded as to the cause of her disappearing behind. The general consensus is that it resulted from a change in diet and exercise regimen.

Jessica Simpson is also rumoured to become the next Bond Girl in the upcoming James Bond film, Casino Royale starring Daniel Craig as James Bond.

Separation

In November 2005, after months of speculation, Simpson and Lachey officially announced that they had separated, though reports stopped short of the couple indicating a divorce. However, later that month it was confirmed that they will indeed get a divorce. Nick and Jessica did not sign a prenuptial agreement, thus leaving Nick free to receive half of her net worth under California law. Last year alone she grossed $35 million dollars. Joint Statement

Faith Hill

Faith Hill

Audrey Faith Perry, later known as Faith Hill (born September 21, 1967 in Jackson, Mississippi), is an American country singer, known for her commercial success as well as her much-publicized marriage to country singer Tim McGraw.

Early life

Hill was raised in Star, Mississippi and began singing at a very early age. After graduating high school, Hill went to college briefly before dropping out and moving to Nashville in an attempt at starting a singing career.

Hill is adopted and met her biological mother in the early 1990s. She was married to a music executive named Dan Hill from 1988 to 1994. Working as a secretary in a music publishing company, Hill’s singing was noticed as she sang to herself one day. She soon signed to Warner Brothers Records.

Country success

Hill’s debut album was Take Me As I Am (1993); sales were strong, buoyed by the chart success of "Wild One". A version of Janis Joplin’s "Piece of My Heart", also went to the top of the country charts. She was delayed in the recording of her second album by surgery on her vocal cords. It Matters to Me finally appeared in 1995 and was another success, with the title track becoming her fourth #1 country single.

Hill began seeing country singer Tim McGraw. When he proposed marriage to her in one of his tour trailers, he had to go perform right then, so she took a permanent marker and wrote her answer on the mirror. Hill began touring with McGraw and married him on October 6, 1996. The couple has three children together: Gracie Katherine, Maggie Elizabeth and Audrey Caroline.

Pop crossover

Faith Hill’s Album BreatheHill’s 1998 album, Faith, moved her closer towards a mainstream, pop-oriented sound, which lost her many of her long-time fans. "This Kiss" became a #1 country hit, and went to #7 on the pop charts.

Hill’s fame grew rapidly as she signed an endorsement deal with CoverGirl makeup and released Breathe, an even more successful pop hit that became one of the biggest albums of 2000. The title track "Breathe" was the #1 pop airplay song that year and has become Hill’s signature song; especially notable is the power and control she shows in her lower register during the song. "The Way You Love Me" hit the top ten as well (#7), and becoming one of the longest running singles in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 (57 weeks). The album won Hill three Grammy Awards including Best Country Album.

By the holidays she had contributed "Where Are You Christmas?" to the movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas and the following summer she recorded the Diane Warren penned "There You’ll Be" for the Pearl Harbor soundtrack.

In 2002, Hill released Cry. Though the album debuted at #1 on Billboard magazine’s pop and country album charts, its singles (including the title track, written and originally performed by Angie Aparo) received much less radio airplay than her previous smashes. In fact, country radio pretty much ignored the songs, considering them "too pop". The album did win one Grammy Award.

In the summer of 2004, Hill co-starred with Nicole Kidman and Matthew Broderick in director Frank Oz’s remake of the 1975 thriller The Stepford Wives.

She references this sojourn in Hollywood as well as the chilly reception of Cry in the 2005 country release "Mississippi Girl", the first single from her back-to-roots album Fireflies. It worked, as the song restored her to the top of the country charts. She performed this song along with "Breathe" and "Piece of My Heart" at the Live 8 concert in Rome on July 2, 2005, where McGraw also performed.

Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley (born March 26, 1985 in Teddington, London, England) is an English actress. She is the daughter of Sharman Macdonald, a Scottish playwright, and Will Knightley, an English actor. Knightley has lived most of her life in Richmond upon Thames.

Career

She started to follow in her parents’ footsteps at an early stage, making her film debut at the age of nine in A Village Affair (1994). Her first major theatrical appearance was as Sabé, Padmé Amidala’s decoy in the 1999 release Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Knightley was cast because of her close resemblance to Natalie Portman, who played Padmé. Her first major starring role was as the daughter of Robin Hood in a made-for-TV Walt Disney Productions feature, Princess of Thieves, first telecast in 2001.

Knightley is best known for her breakthrough roles in Bend It Like Beckham and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Bend It Like Beckham was especially physically demanding for Knightley in terms of the intense football training she underwent but opened the way for her into Hollywood. Her role in the blockbuster Pirates cemented her up-and-coming position in international cinema.

In 2004 Knightley appeared in the blockbuster King Arthur, which, although criticised for its numerous historical inaccuracies, was praised by critic Roger Ebert for "the considerable production qualities and the charisma of the actors, who bring more interest to the characters than they deserve", Knightley being described as looking "simultaneously sexy and muddy" fitting in with the current vogue for strong female action heroes (something which Knightley repeated in a modern setting in the 2005 film Domino).

Keira Knightley in King Arthur (2004).Knightley’s dedication to developing herself as an actress rather than a movie star was noted by Time magazine in a 2004 feature. In July 2004, Knightley was voted by readers of Hello! magazine as the movie industry’s most promising teen star. Additionally, Knightley was voted the sexiest movie star of all time by the readers of Empire magazine, leaving behind other stars such as Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Charlize Theron, Julia Roberts, Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot.

In 2005 Knightley starred in the title role of Tony Scott’s film Domino inspired by the life of his friend Domino Harvey, a British born model-turned- L.A. bounty hunter who died in July 2005 of an overdose aged 35. Ebert commented that, although the movie is "fractured and maddening" it is also "alive", praising Knightley for her ability to play a diversity of roles. In contrast to Knightley’s role in the same year of the regency englishwoman Elizabeth Bennett in a film adaption of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice with Donald Sutherland and Matthew Macfadyen. Recently opening at No.1 in the UK box office, it is her sixth film to do so in her career.

She is currently filming the sequels to the immensely popular Pirates of the Caribbean series, due for release in the summers of 2006 and 2007 respectively. She recently ended her relationship with Irish model Jamie Dornan. She has been awarded Personality Of The Year 2005 by Variety UK, and is widely tipped for either a Golden Globe or Academy Award nomination in 2006 for her portrayal of Elizabeth Bennet in Pride & Prejudice. Beside acting, Knightley is currently modelling for Asprey, a British luxury items company.
